Biodegradable sanitary pads are composed of materials specifically chosen for their ability to break down naturally over time. However, it's important to note that not all components used in sanitary pads are biodegradable. One such example is Super Absorbent Polymer (SAP), which cannot biodegrade. Here is a detailed explanation of the materials used in biodegradable sanitary pads and why not all components are biodegradable:

Biodegradable Topsheet: The topsheet of biodegradable sanitary pads is typically made from natural fibers like bamboo, organic cotton, or cornstarch-based materials. These materials are chosen for their biodegradability and ability to provide a soft, comfortable, and breathable layer against the skin.

Biodegradable Absorbent Core: The absorbent core of biodegradable sanitary pads is often made from sustainably sourced wood pulp or bamboo fibers. These natural materials are biodegradable and offer effective absorption to keep the user dry and comfortable.

Biodegradable Backsheet: The backsheet, which provides a waterproof barrier, is usually made from biodegradable materials like cornstarch-based films or compostable bioplastics. These materials offer protection against leaks while being environmentally friendly.

Biodegradable Wrappers: The wrappers used to individually package biodegradable sanitary pads are also made from compostable materials such as plant-based films or paper. These wrappers break down more easily in the environment compared to conventional plastic wrappers.

Elastic Components: The elastic elements used in the construction of biodegradable sanitary pads, such as waistbands or leg cuffs, may not be biodegradable. These elastic components are often made from synthetic materials like latex or spandex, which do not break down naturally. However, efforts are being made to explore biodegradable alternatives for these elastic components.

Super Absorbent Polymer (SAP): SAP is a component used in most sanitary pads to enhance their absorbency. Unfortunately, SAP is not biodegradable. It is typically made from synthetic materials and does not break down in the environment. However, the use of SAP in biodegradable sanitary pads is usually minimized to reduce its environmental impact.

While the majority of the materials used in biodegradable sanitary pads are chosen for their biodegradability, it's essential to consider that some components, like SAP and elastic elements, may not be biodegradable.
